Hoppin' around: Easter Bunny delivers record passengers at GC Airport

Australians and overseas visitors hopped back into holiday mode over the long weekend, delivering Gold Coast Airport April passenger records.

Australians and overseas visitors hopped back into holiday mode over the long weekend, delivering Gold Coast Airport April passenger records.

The #ArrivalRevival is here to stay!

The highest number of passengers was recorded on Easter Monday when the Gold Coast Airport team welcomed and farewelled almost 25,000 people – setting a new April record for the airport.

Close behind were the 24,000 passengers who came through the terminal on Thursday 14 April. The figures were not far off the all-time GCA record of 25,455 passengers in one day – recorded on 4 January 2020 – just before the pandemic.

Queensland Airports Limited CEO Chris Mills said it was a fantastic Easter weekend for the Gold Coast tourism industry and the boom conditions were expected to continue into May.

“We are anticipating busy weekends for the Anzac Day and May Day long weekends coming up, as more Australians start holidaying again and enjoy seeing their loved ones around the country,” he said.

Mr Mills thanked the airport team and its partners for ensuring passengers got where they needed to go throughout the weekend.

“It was a busy weekend but things worked relatively well operationally,” he said.

“Thanks to anyone who travelled over this period for their patience.”

Last week Sydney Airport also experienced its busiest day for domestic air travel in more than two years, with 82,000 passengers passing through its gates.

These figures represent the first time Sydney Airport’s domestic terminals have had more than 80,000 passengers since 6 March 2020, surpassing the previous post-COVID peak of 78,000 domestic passengers on Friday 8 April.

Some airports are still grappling with staff shortages due to COVID-19 and isolation requirements, so it’s a good idea if you’re travelling over the upcoming long weekend to arrive at the airport in plenty of time.
