Thick black smoke, dozens of guests and a celebrity were seen evacuating one of central London’s high-end hotels yesterday afternoon after it caught fire.

Yes, pop star Robbie Williams was among the travellers seen emerging from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Wednesday, where a fire spread across several floors of the property.

Locals and tourists described the smoke escaping the £600 (AU$1,50)-a-night building as so thick it created a black cloud above the 12-storey building.

Some 20 fire engines and 100 firefighters were called to tackle the fire, which had advanced using a vertical facade for plants, Daily Mail reported.

In a Facebook statement, the Mandarin Oriental Group said all guests and staff were safe and accounted for, and the group is currently organising alternative accommodation in the vicinity.

The statement continued, explaining that the cause of the fire is still unknown, as is the full extent of damage.

A full investigation is underway and will take time to complete. Further updates will be issued as appropriate.

According to reports, the luxury hotel had recently completed a £185million refurbishment of all rooms and social spaces and had only re-opened rooms to the public last week.

Travel Agents who’s clients have upcoming bookings with the property are being told to get in touch with their contact at the Mandarin Oriental Group for relocation and refund options.
