Luxe loo with an out-of-this-world view: Space Spa debuts at 100,000 feet

Commercial spaceflight experience company Space Perspective has unveiled its out-of-this-world Space Spa – the first-ever restroom in space – on board the Spaceship Neptune capsule with commercial flights planned for late 2024.

Commercial spaceflight experience company Space Perspective has unveiled its out-of-this-world Space Spa – the first-ever restroom in space – on board the Spaceship Neptune capsule with commercial flights planned for late 2024.

Space Perspective’s Space Spa facilities are akin to those found in a first-class aircraft cabin for a solo inflight oasis for eight travellers and one captain.

Based on Florida’s Space Coast, carbon-neutral Space Perspective uses an innovative spacecraft, featuring a pressurised capsule propelled slowly to the edge of space by a giant SpaceBalloon.

Located on one side of the capsule’s interior Space Lounge, the Space Spa adds to the luxury onboard experience.

This includes a world-class food and beverage program, ultra-comfortable seating, custom headphones, amenity kits and Wi-Fi.

Space Perspective Founder & Co-CEO and original Biosphere 2 crew member Jane Poynter said the Space Spa answers a frequently asked question about the six-hour spaceflight experience.

“One of the most consistent questions we receive when people learn that our spaceflight lasts six hours is if there will be a loo,” she said.

“The answer is always, of course, yes. And there is no need for a vacuum toilet like astronauts contend with, or a diaper.

“Having a proper and beautifully designed restroom contributes significantly to the accessible and unique experience we are offering.”

Space Perspective Co-Design Lead Isabella Trani added: “The Space Spa is the one place in the capsule’s interior where explorers can have a moment of solitude so it was imperative that it felt like a retreat.”

“Explorers will find this environment cocooning and comforting with no sharp edges, which adds to the ambience and creates a very welcoming place.

“On a practical level, the design has surfaces that are easy to wipe down, not to mention sound and odour control through the padding and greenery.”

In July 2023, the company announced it had sold more than 1,600 tickets at USD$125,000 per seat, representing USD$200 million in sales.
