There’s no doubt Instagram has led a cultural shift towards visual communication, connecting people around the world and even creating new marketing opportunities for the travel industry.
Everyone from Tourism Australia to helloworld has used the mobile tool to spread the travel word and create some of the most successful marketing campaigns through photosharing alone.
As the app celebrates its fifth anniversary today, we take a look back at Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger’s masterpiece and how it has been utilised by the industry to inspire and promote travel.

In September 2015, Travel retailer Helloworld created an Instagram relay using the #helloworldrelay hashtag across 70 countries to celebrate World Tourism Day.
Head of Financial Services and Travel at Instagram, Paul McCrory said travel has always been a key part of Instagram because it ‘is a beautiful canvas to engage with a community of passionate and aspiring travellers’.

NT’s Hypermeet

In March 2015, Tourism Northern Territory launched an industry first with its Hypermeet Instagram campaign, which saw three of Australia’s top Instagrammers Matt Glastonbury, Mia Glastonbury and Matthew Vandeputte use Instagram’s hyperlapse app to capture the Red Centre unique ways.

In December 2014, Tourism Australia hit more than 1 million followers on Instagram, making it the most successful national destination page in the world. The Instagram account has shown us that the world is in awe of our beautiful beaches and unique wildlife, doing a great job of showcasing what our nation has to offer international guests.
Hamilton’s InstaMeet

In February 2013, Hamilton Island held their ‘Ultimate InstaMeet’ called ‘Return2Paradise which generated 800 Likes and saw over 50 photos of the island.
They brought Australian and American Instagrammers including Em Rusciano, Lauren Bath, Hayden Quinn and Home and Away stars to act as ambassadors for the island.
The campaign grew Hamilton Island’s Instagram community by 3,000 percent.
