Japan is the number-one, most-searched destination globally with the latest data showing a massive surge of more than 1,500 per cent in travel searches to the East Asia nation, according to an Agoda report – the highest increase of any border reopening so far.

Japan reopened fully to international tourism on 11 October 2022, removing all final border restrictions including the daily arrivals cap and tourist visa requirements.

Individual visitors are now allowed to enter the country and Japan has reinstated visa waivers, allowing travellers from countries such as Australia, the UK and the US to receive a visa on arrival.

Triple-vaccinated travellers do not need to test before travelling or on arrival however, unvaccinated travellers will still need to provide proof of a negative test before departure.

Japan has long captured the hearts of many as the travel destination of choice and travellers have been eager to revisit the unique culture and authentic experiences the nation has to offer.

A perennially popular destination for Aussie travellers, interest in travel to Japan has not waned despite some of the world’s strictest border restrictions that saw the country closed to international visitors for more than 2.5 years.

East Asian nations (South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan) lead the charge with travel searches for Japan with Australia just behind the US in terms of inbound market interest.

Domestic travel within Japan has also increased with Agoda reporting a 135 per cent rise in domestic travel searches compared to 2019 levels.

Comparatively, Japanese travellers are slower to resume international travel with a 67.2 per cent increase in searches since announcements were made.
