Jetstar passengers can now try their luck at flying up the pointy end for less, with the airline introducing a new cash upgrade bidding system on long-haul routes.
Today, the low-cost carrier unveiled BidCash, a product that allows eligible travellers to bid for Business Class seats on most international flights operated by its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet.
Under the new system, customers can place a monetary bid for an upgrade after booking their flight. If successful, they receive a confirmation email and an updated itinerary before departure.
Jetstar says bids start from as little as $180, depending on the route.

At launch, the Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City service features a minimum bid at that level.
According to Jetstar, travellers can either follow an invitation sent via email or access the BidCash upgrade page through its website.
A slider tool lets customers select their bid amount within a set range for each route.
Refreshed 787s

The move coincides with a major upgrade to the airline’s B787 cabins, with the first aircraft nearing completion of a refurbishment in Hong Kong, which includes a significant expansion of the Business Class section. When complete, the premium cabin will more than double from 21 seats to 44.
The redesigned seats feature a 38-inch pitch, seven-inch recline and wider 21-inch seating, along with adjustable headrests, calf and footrests and in-seat device holders with USB-C charging.
Passengers in Business Class will also have access to onboard wi-fi and Jetstar’s streaming entertainment platform on personal devices.
Jetstar plans to roll out the cabin upgrades across its entire Dreamliner fleet over the next two years.
The airline says it also plans to extend upgrade bidding to Qantas Frequent Flyer members soon, including options using Qantas Points.

“Our customers love a good deal and BidCash makes upgrading to Business simple, easy and affordable so they can take off more for less,” Jetstar’s Executive Manager, Customer and Digital Prue McKenzie said.
“With our first refreshed Boeing 787 aircraft entering service in the coming weeks, there’s never been a better time to bid your way into Business.
“And soon, Qantas Frequent Flyers will have even more Business upgrade options, including a Classic Rewards product and Points Plus Pay, giving them additional ways to enjoy a Jetstar Business experience.”
