Hold onto your laptops and tablets! Virgin Australia passengers at Melbourne Airport now have a smoother security screening experience and access to more services with the new $30 million Terminal 3 redevelopment, which includes an indoor walkway linking the landside departures levels of Terminals 3 and 4.

Virgin Australia guests will be screened using the latest smart security technology, which allows passengers to keep laptops, tablets and liquids in their bags, plus an additional two lanes to increase processing capacity.

VA passengers can now enjoy a wider range of facilities right up until boarding and for the first time at Melbourne Airport, the Virgin Australia lounge is located in the secure airside zone.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said the upgrade work has been driven by the airport’s vision to become Australia’s favourite airport destination.

“Virgin Australia is Melbourne Airport’s fastest growing customer, but the terminal hasn’t had an upgrade this significant in more than 20 years,” she said.

“One of the biggest pinch points for Virgin guests has been the security checkpoints, and we expect this change will help improve the experience for passengers as they pass through screening.”

The upgrade comes as Melbourne Airport recorded its highest domestic passenger numbers since January 2020.

A total of 2,516,836 people travelled through the airport in July, including 1,934,746 domestic passengers and 582,072 international passengers, up 25 per cent from June 2022.

Ms Argus said rebuilding the workforce remained the biggest short-term challenge for aviation amid staff shortages and the airport will partner with Hume Council to stage a jobs expo on 18 August.

Melbourne Airport has hundred of different roles to fill.

“Melbourne Airport is one of the largest single-site employment hubs in the state with thousands of roles across airlines, ground handlers, transport, retail, maintenance and other contractors,” she said.

“Across the precinct, we have hundreds of vacancies to fill, and this is an opportunity for job seekers to meet directly with potential employers.”
