A 20-year-old Melbourne woman, Elly Warren, has been raped and murdered in Mozambique whilst travelling and volunteering as a swimming teacher to African children.

Elly had been backpacking in Mozambique in southern Africa on a gap year for three months before the fatal night when she was snatched on her way back to her beachfront backpacker accommodation by an unknown assailant.

She was allegedly raped, killed, and then dumped in a toilet block.

The young woman, who loved the ocean and protecting the environment, was meant to return back to her home in Melbourne’s south-east on Monday. Now, her grieving family have to come to terms with facing the fact that they will never see her again.

Speaking to Seven News, Paul Warren, the father of Elly, told media that she was concerned over her safety before heading off overseas:

“She even told me ‘it’s dangerous, Dad, I don’t know if I should be going over there… And I said to her, ‘Yes, it is very dangerous.’”

So far, the person who committed this heinous crime has not been identified. Elly’s dad, Paul, hopes that they “catch the bastards” very soon.

According to those that knew her, Elly was one of those people who just loved travelling. She wanted to travel all over the world  and see everything she could before she hit 30.

Unfortunately her wanderlust was snuffed and her dreams of travelling the world cut short.

Smartraveller is urging Australian travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in Mozambique overall, and to reconsider their need to travel between the Save River and Muxungue and from Gorongosa to Caia on the grounds of safety concerns.
