Single Parent Staycation: how new luxury hotel Mondrian Hong Kong launched with a community-first strategy

For its opening in late December, 2023, the management of Mondrian Hong Kong decided to focus on those who most needed a break, working with local NGOs to deliver free packages for some of Hong Kong’s single parent families. Here, we talk to General Manager Dirk Dalichau about the unique launch strategy.

Belonging to the Ennismore hotel group, the management at the 324-key Mondrian Hong Kong chose a launch campaign strategy with a difference – announcing a Single Parent Staycation package.

As part of Mondrian Hong Kong’s commitment to giving back and being truly part of the community and our neighbourhood, we decided not to host VIPs and celebrities as our first guests – but to mark the beginning of our journey with those who would benefit most from a small getaway, while also introducing our brand in a meaningful way and starting our journey to use business for good,” explains Dalichau.

The hotel partnered with local not-for-profit organisations SoCo and the Hong Kong Single Parents’ Association on the initiative.

“Both SoCo and the Hong Kong Single Parents’ Association are recognised entities who have been providing valuable resources and assisting families here for a long time,” said Dalichau.

“By collaborating with these organisations, we not only extended our reach and made a positive impact on the lives of these families, but also supported these NGOs in their continued efforts to help,” he said.

“The response to the Single Parent Staycation package was overwhelming, with one organisation receiving more than 150 family applications on the first day. This incredible response demonstrates the need for such opportunities and motivates us to continue supporting this group in the long run. The families who participated in the staycation were filled with excitement and happiness. They expressed their gratitude through heartfelt messages and even hand-written thank-you cards from the children, which deeply touched our hearts,” said Dalichau.

The activity, says Dalichau, marked the start of the hotel’s commitment to the city and its neighbourhood, and points more broadly to its environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies.

“It demonstrates our care for people as part of our ESG plan for the future,” says Dalichau.

“To support this activity, we created a job-sharing scheme for single parents. Their challenge often lies in balancing work and family commitments. Mondrian Hong Kong will offer the opportunity for them to share one job with another single parent, whilst receiving full benefits. With the majority of single parents being female, it furthermore aligned with our vision to support women and create equal opportunities for all genders,” he said.
