1. Australian aviation in crisis

Regional Express (REX) has posted a $7.725 million net profit for the year ending June, down 44.9% year-on-year declaring that Aviation in Australia was in “deep crisis”. The airlines CEO, Lim Kai Hai blamed the carbon tax and record fuel prices for the profit slump, whichalso saw revenue falling from 1.9% to $253.3 million. Despite passenger numbers also declining, Mr Hai said REX was still “Australia’s most profitable airline group”.

“Aviation in Australia is in deep crisis with Qantas and Virgin Australia losing a combined $4.4 billion at pre-tax level for FY14,” Mr Hai said.

“This clearly demonstrates the prolonged and endemic crisis that is gripping Australian aviation,”

he said.

Mr Hai said that “God willing” the airline will be able to “weather the storm”, referring to the current aviation outlook.

“Our high efficiencies have enabled us to continue to be profitable, and our very strong foundations allowed us to make a significant investment of over $56 million even during these difficult times in the same way that we invested heavily when the Global Financial Crisis hit,” Mr Hai said. The airline has forecasted a similar FY15 outlook.

The revenue in 2014 is reported at £10.5m, a drop £250m in 2010. Tourism to Egypt has dropped considerably to just 9.5 million staying in the country’s hotels compared with 14.7 in 2010, before travel warnings and social unrest was declared in 2011. The drop has left the ministry struggling to pay staff working at monument sites, their wage largely subsidised by income derived from tourist visits.

“It’s dead,” Mena Melad, the editor of the Luxor Times, told ETN.

“It’s even worse than in 1997 after the massacre of the tourists,” at the Hatshepsut temple in the Valley of the Kings. “There are lots of people who have given up working in tourism and are trying to find new work.”
