NO.1 WITH A BULLET TRAIN: Accor launches first Pullman in Japan; 1000th hotel in Asia-Pacific

Convenient and quiet – modern and traditional – the Pullman Tokyo Tamachi might just be your new favourite Tokyo hotel to send clients

Convenient and quiet – modern and traditional – the Pullman Tokyo Tamachi might just be your new favourite Tokyo hotel to send clients

Accor Hotel’s recently launched their first Pullman in Japan, the Pullman Tokyo Tamachi, a Tokyo stay that manages to be both close to everything, and far enough away that it is a bit of oasis from Tokyo’s – admittedly appealing – chaos.

The hotel is based in the business-y Tamachi area that is home to offices, but also a series of tranquil canals that you can wander just a few blocks from the hotel.

The hotel is a winning mix of luxe and arty, with traditional design elements and cutting-edge food and drinks.

Aussie connection

The Pullman Tokyo Tamachi GM, Darren Morrish, is an Aussie expat with a passion for Japan. He thinks that Aussies will be keen to use the Pullman as a base for snow trips but he is also a big train fan. One of the things he loves about Tokyo, and his hotel’s position, is you can just pick a railway station to explore and get lost in that one stop for the entire day.

The Pullman is located right on top of Tokyo’s Tamachi station which means that with a bit of help from train-savvy staff you can get anywhere in Tokyo. In just a handful of stops you can be in the designer hub of Harajuku, mixing with the hoards braving Shibuya Crossing – or discovering the nerd heaven of anime and electronics at Akhibhara.

The rooms

In a town where space is at a premium, smart design makes this larger-than-usual Tokyo hotel room seem even bigger. You’re Illy coffee makers shares a bench with your bathroom washbasin, but a smart, open-plan design – with hidden bar fridges and slim cupboards – makes it all work.

The bed is a Pullman signature and is so comfortable you will understand why they sell the bed; it would be quite the souvenir and after a couple of nights here you can see why people want to take it home with them.

The food and drink

Just off the kabuki-themed lobby is KASA restaurant, all bird cages and minimalism. This is the place for breakfast but also for a night-time menu that takes Japanese classics like sashimi (and horse tartare, try it you will be pleasantly surprised) and gives them a hotel spin.

The party spot is Platform 9, the rooftop bar that is open to the elements so you can chat to the soundtrack of passing bullet trains. Drinks are designed by Roman Foltan of Singapore’s hip Atlas Bar and there is a mural featuring undersea life that was painted during the opening night party.
