Getting into the Spirit: after three years away, Norwegian Cruise Line returns to Sydney

Of all of the fantastic features that Norwegian Spirit boasts - and there are many, from its adults-only Spice H2O pool retreat to its luxury ‘Thermal’ spa suite and any number of outstanding restaurants - it could just be the cruise ship’s height that has the powers that be at Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) most excited. At least while the vessel is in Sydney.

Of all of the fantastic features that Norwegian Spirit boasts – and there are many, from its adults-only Spice H2O pool retreat to its luxury ‘Thermal’ spa suite and any number of outstanding restaurants – it could just be the cruise ship’s height that has the powers that be at Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) most excited. At least while the vessel is in Sydney.

The ship’s arrival in the Harbour City yesterday marked NCL’s long-awaited return to Australia after an enforced three-year absence.

And at a big bash in Sydney on Wednesday, the cruise line duly celebrated with its valued partners and travel industry friends.

As part of the festivities, guests even travelled the short distance from White Bay Cruise Terminal to the Overseas Passengers Terminal, sailing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge on the vessel, which is the only ship in the NCL fleet capable of doing so.

It was an opportunity that had many of those present reaching for their cameras and no doubt meant a lot to the largely international clientele on board as well.

Norwegian Spirit recently underwent the most expensive and extensive revitalisation program ever undertaken by NCL – a US$100 million (AU$150 million) bow-to-stern revitalisation.

Speaking at the Sydney event, NCL president and CEO Harry Sommer said that “other than the steel and engine room … this ship has basically been completely torn down and redone”.

The cruise line had been given the chance to “reimagine” the ocean liner in a redesign that has the adult cruiser in mind, he added.

Bringing this particular ship down under also underlines the cruise line’s dedication to the Australian market.

“We’re committed to this market; we’re committed to likely bringing this ship … the only ship in our fleet that can fit under the bridge … to this market on an annual basis for many, many years to come.”

“So we’re here, we love it. We bring one of our best vessels here.”

What guests can expect on board

Along with a host of superb restaurants, including the fine-dining Onda by Scarpetta, the ship features the luxurious Mandala Spa, which has doubled in size following the ship’s revitalisation. If you’re looking for luxury, the spa even has heated-tile loungers with ocean views.

Elsewhere, the Stardust Theatre presents performances like the pop-country spectacular, Blazing Boots, and the acrobatic Elements show.

“We’re thrilled to finally welcome Norwegian Spirit to Australia – she is well and truly worth the wait,” NCL APAC vice president and managing director Ben Angell said.

“We know Australians love our contemporary, laidback style of cruising, as well as the outstanding value only an NCL cruise can offer.”

And if they’re travelling through Sydney, they’re going to love sailing under the Harbour Bridge too.
