Amadeus is moving in on the booming low-cost carrier business, with the $830 million acquisition of hosting platform, Navitaire.

Navitaire focuses on providing revenue-generation and cost streamlining solutions in the areas of reservations, ancillary sales, loyalty, revenue management, revenue accounting and business intelligence.

It currently has more than 50 airlines and other operators under its belt, including a number of budget airlines such as AirAsia, CanJet Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Jetstar, Nok Air and more.

Although Amadeus has its own airline offering, Altéa suite, however, the program is usually favoured by larger network airlines.

Navitaire has a number of low-cost carriers under its belt including Jetstar.

Amadeus said the purchase gives it an edge in the low-cost field and the Asia Pacific region, where Navitaire has significant market share.

The announcement comes as rival Sabre completes its move into the Asia Pacific, with the acquisition of Abacus International.

According to the technology company, it will use Navitaire to ‘market and sell its two product portfolios separately’. It will also continue to invest in both platforms as well as enhance the ‘services and functionality availability to all types of airlines’.

Amadeus has been actively building its business over the last few months with new technology and purchases.

New advancements include the announcement that it will build its very own cloud system.

Similar to that of the Apple cloud, Amadeus Cloud Services will allow users to send their bookings, searches and emails to ‘the cloud’ where is will safely be stored away.

This will free up computer space and allow agents and other users to access information on-the-go.
