Brisbane Airport has shared the major BNE International Terminal upgrades set to revolutionise the travel experience – the capital city hub’s most significant changes in almost three decades – as part of the $5 billion Future BNE project.
Travellers can look forward to a faster and better security screening experience, self-service check-in and bag drop, and upgraded baggage systems for the biggest overhaul to the BNE International Terminal in 29 years.
Airside, international travellers will also enjoy 31 refreshed retail options with the Lotte Duty-Free area set to double in size as part of the staged redevelopment set to conclude in 2027.
Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff will announce the news at the CAPA Airline Leader Summit Australia Pacific 2024, starting today at The Star Brisbane.
“Our International Terminal is Queensland’s gateway to the world. After three decades of service, it’s well and truly time for a transformation, ensuring it’s ready to welcome the world for years to come,” de Graaf said, adding that 110 million passengers have passed through BNE International Terminal since it opened.
Future-forward, state-of-the-art screening
To upgrade security screening equipment in line with Australian Government standards by 2025, the new, next-generation Computed Tomography (CT) security screening equipment will mean travellers can leave items, such as laptops, in their carry-on for less queueing time and better accuracy.
“Travellers will enjoy less hassle with the new screening system, by keeping laptops and other electronic items in their bags. It’s faster, smoother and provides more accurate screening,” de Graaff said.
The same technology is being installed in the Domestic Terminal and is part of the single largest airport deployment of Rapiscan Systems in South-East Asia and among one of the largest globally.
Streamlined check-in & sustainable features
BNE international travellers will also have a seamless check-in process with Amadeus-powered advanced self-service technology at bag drop and check-in and brand new, energy-efficient conveyor system and Standard 3 technology baggage security screening equipment.
Other sustainability features include electric charging stations for aircraft support vehicles and Brisbane tuff volcanic rock originally quarried from Kangaroo Point Cliffs in the 1880s reborn as terrazzo benchtops and furniture in the BNE International Terminal.
Planning is also underway for a Terminal 3 development, which will be conveniently located between BNE’s two parallel runways and accommodate 50 million passengers by 2040.
