Plane windows are about to get even cooler

French aerospace firm Vision Systems are currently working on a new piece of tech that’s about to revolutionise the industry, with a plane window concept that features “active vision”.

Forget windows that tint at the touch of a button, such as you’ll already find on Boeing 787 Dreamliners – that’s old technology.

Instead, get ready for plane windows 2.0: we’re talking windows that self-tint, display flight paths, and even allow communication with cabin crew.

The new technology, which will run completely on solar power and uses a different compound to the tinted windows found inside Dreamliners – will respond to light, temperature and even the position of the sun to control the opacity of a window – automatically.

No more sending a flight attendant down the aisle pulling down shades to keep the plane cool as it sits in the sun. The technology can be applied in the cockpit, too.

It will also offer 99 per cent UV protection when the windows are darkened, and can be fitted into both flat or curved surfaces.

And get this: the solar power stored from the window can also be used to power other devices, such as lights.

Pretty cool, huh?

But that’s only the half of it.

The French firm is also quick to highlight that the new “active windows” have no moving parts, as the electronics are fully integrated. This would reduce maintenance costs and downtime.

The windows can also removed quickly in case of an emergency and are made of high optical quality and scratch resistant composite glass.

Indeed according to, Alexandra Martin-Devaud:

“They [will] also participate to weight reduction of about 30% compared with motorized shades, and do not add weight in comparison to a window with a manual shade.”

Alexandra Martin-Devaud,  communication manager, Vision Systems.

Sounds like a promising piece of technology, right?

But Vision Systems is taking the concept of “active windows” one step further, and we’re mighty excited.

The company is also working on displaying important information onscreen for passengers to access, as well as establishing a means of communication with aircraft staff.

Indeed, this new piece of tech is sure to make the coveted window seat even more attractive!

Vision Systems is currently seeking the attention of commercial and business aviation managers to take their technology to the consumer.

True, we may not be at the stage yet when windowless planes will soon be a reality, but things are looking pretty interesting moving forward indeed.

Do you think this new technology will make plane travel more comfortable?
