Viator, a TripAdvisor company that sells tours and activities online, has analysed its data from 2015 and announced the top travel trends of last year.
Archaeology themed tours are on the rise, as are motorbike tours and sailing trips.
According to the data, archaeology themed tours have grown 500 percent year over year, in part due to a number of new products that have hit the market.
These include the Naples above and underground walking tour and the Easter Island Moai archaeology tour.

So it seems that travellers are looking to learn something on their time away.
Outdoor adventure tours and activities are also growing in popularity amongst travellers, with motorcycle tours, jet boat and speed boat tours, scuba and snorkelling, ziplines and sailing trips growing a hefty 80 percent compared to 2014.
But it’s not just active tours that travellers are flocking to. Food and drink tours – e.g., cooking classes, city food tours, and brewery tours – have also experienced a 70 percent year over year growth.
Viator also saw an increase in their series of ‘in a day’ city tours. These tours are available in major cities across the world including Barcelona, Corfu, Madrid, Mauritius, Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, Kyoto and London.
“Our recent data proves that the demand for curated, hand-picked and new cultural tours is on the rise which is why our archaeological and private customised tours are seeing continued growth year-on-year and we expect this trend to continue well in to 2016.”
Just recently, G Adventures announced a new series of cultural tours with National Geographic including a tour with a local Aboriginal guide through the Daintree Rainforest.
