New QantasLink routes to take Aussies to two remote Indian Ocean gems

QantasLink will add two of Australia’s most remote destinations to its network later this year, with flights to Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands launching on 3 November 2025.

The services, operating under a new five-year agreement with the Australian Government, will run twice weekly from Perth, providing a crucial link for around 2,500 residents across both territories. Tickets go on sale from 18 August 2025.

The partnership also includes dedicated freight flights, supporting everything from tourism and community needs to government operations.

Flights will depart Perth on Mondays and Fridays, with a travel time of about five hours.

Operated by all-economy Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, the new routes will connect into Qantas’ broader domestic and international network, making it easier for Australians, and overseas visitors, to explore these unique outposts.

QantasLink CEO Rachel Yangoyan says the airline would benefit locals and visitors.

“We’re proud to have been selected by the Australian Government to provide these essential services to the Indian Ocean Territories,” she states.

“QantasLink has a long history connecting remote communities across Australia, and we’re committed to delivering a reliable and warm service to customers.

“We look forward to supporting these island communities and helping maintain their vital connection to mainland Australia, while also making it easier for Australians to discover the incredible natural beauty and unique cultures of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.”

Christmas Island is known for its red crab migration and rich birdlife, while the Cocos (Keeling) Islands boast turquoise lagoons, beaches and distinctive Cocos Malay culture.

The new flights will be among Qantaslink’s longest. In May, the carrier announced similarly long services from Perth, with direct flights to Newcastle and Hobart set to take off in September 2025.
