Rooftop pools & bars are the liveliest social spots in any destination, except in California’s popular coastal city Santa Monica which, surprisingly, doesn’t have its own rooftop setting. Well, not yet.

It’s true, despite have perfect weather and a natural inclination towards water-based social activities, Santa Monica does not have a rooftop pool and bar.

At least not until the neighbourhood’s newest hotel opens its doors.

Santa Monica Proper will be the first in the coastal city to have a rooftop pool and bar when it opens on 17 June 2019.

Santa Monica Travel & Tourism’s Lauren Salisbury told KARRYON at IPW in Anaheim this week, that the outdoor social playground will come with a pool, cabanas, a bar, and a restaurant. Get splashing!

Although based inside a renovated 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival building, the Santa Monica Proper is described as a sleek and modern property with 271 rooms designed by prominent interior designer Kelly Wearstler.

There are 10 different room categories to choose from – including Deluxe King, Deluxe Double Queen, Garden Terrace King and more – and each comes with a view of either the ocean or the city. Other highlights of the property include rental surfboards, a 24-hour fitness centre, an in-house spa and a restaurant lounge.

Meanwhile, the Oceana Hotel is undergoing a US$35 million makeover complete with new interiors and a new restaurant.

Santa Monica-born and France-trained Chef Raphael Lunette has been recruited to create all dining options within the refreshed property and a first-of-its-kind Children’s Museum for the area will open with interactive exhibits such as a wall of electronic butterflies that are imagined to teach young travellers about the power of stillness.
