SCENIC ECLIPSE: The world's first discovery yacht launches today, for real!

As you read this, Helen Mirren is preparing for her godmother duties because it’s only a matter of hours until the World’s First Discovery Yacht, Scenic Eclipse, officially launches.

Despite a few setbacks (three, but who’s counting), Scenic’s pride and joy in the ocean, Scenic Eclipse, will finally set off on her maiden voyage today (15 August).

Bring out the streamers because the 228-passenger ship is en-route to Reykavik, Iceland right now.

Read on for more on the ship and her debut:

SO EXCITED, BUT IS SHE ACTUALLY REAL?

Guys, Scenic Eclipse does exist. In fact, she was last seen 20 hours ago in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

If the Instagram picture above isn’t enough proof for you, the Discovery Yacht was spotted during her sea trials mid-June and earlier this month, she was filmed during her passover from the factory to the cruise line.

You can confidently book the vessel’s many itineraries (so many, in fact, 2020/21 and 22 itineraries are available – click here).

OKAY, BUT CAN YOU JUST REMIND ME OF WHY WE LOVE HER?

The words ‘world’s first discovery yacht’ didn’t grab you? How about that helipad?! Or the submarine?

Scenic Eclipse is a unique creature (until her sister comes along) in that she breaks the mould when it comes to technology, size and luxury.

Thanks to Glen Moroney’s push for custom-built features, she’ll be able to reach destinations that “most people have only seen on TV documentaries” while also ensuring they remain untouched and undamaged by her presence.

She’ll have special stabilisers (50 percent larger than the standard vessel) dynamic positioning (that’ll remove the need for anchoring) and she has highest Ice Class rating of any luxury expedition vessel.

Beyond that, the 168m discovery yacht will be fuelled by Marine Gas Oil (MGO), which is the highest class of marine fuel, state-of-the-art wastewater system, and the Azipod propulsion system which results in the lowest noise levels.

SHE’S CLEAN, NICE. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ONBOARD EXPERIENCE?

You’ll definitely want to diet (safely) before and after you board.

The award-winning ship (yep, won even before launching) has nine dining experiences AND eight bars/lounges.

Choices include ‘Lumiere’ a fine-dining French restaurant, Elements the main restaurant, Azure Bar & Café and the Yacht Club. There’s also Asian Fusion at Koko’s and a Chef’s Table experience.

In-room dining is also an option for the introvert evenings, or there’s the Champagne Bar, Lobby Lounge, and more for those feeling a little social.

WHAT DOES SHE HAVE BEYOND FOOD?

Ready for mass information consumption? Okay, let’s go.

Scenic Eclipse has all-verandah suites, all-inclusive well (everything is covered baby), there’s a 6-star spa experience, there’s a 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio, there’s a gym and a yoga/pilates studio, indoor and outdoor pools are available, and temperature-controlled plunge pools.

There’s also women and men’s saunas, steam rooms, thermal lounges, sunbeds, butler service for every guest, all-inclusive dining and beverages, free wi-fi, daily entertainment, education programs, there’s an Airbus EC-130-T2 helicopter and a U-Boat Worx Cruise Submarine 7.
