“This isn’t a farewell”: Spencer Travel sells corporate arm after 26 years, pivots to leisure

After 26 years in corporate travel, Penny Spencer is turning the page. The Spencer Travel Founder and Managing Director has announced the sale of the company’s corporate division to LodgeLink, a Black Diamond Group business, in a move that reflects a major shift in focus - in particular, to the leisure market.

Under the new structure, the Spencer Group of Companies will handle corporate travel, while Spencer Travel Holdings will hone in on leisure, wellness and its growing independent contractor network.

The sale marks a new chapter for Spencer, who will remain actively involved, joining the LodgeLink Australian board and supporting the transition process.

“This is both a reflective and exciting moment for me,” Spencer said. “After 26 incredible years, I’ve chosen to transition the corporate division to a trusted partner who shares our values and commitment to service.

“This evolution enables me to focus on the future of leisure and wellness travel, and to support the next generation of travel entrepreneurs through new and emerging business models.”

Existing staff, clients and suppliers are expected to see no change to service levels.

“We are delighted to welcome Spencer Group of Companies to the LodgeLink family as we expand our full-service travel capabilities in Australia,” LodgeLink CEO Trevor Haynes said.

“Penny has built a remarkable business grounded in quality service and industry expertise. We’re excited to work alongside the talented team she has assembled.”

According to Spencer Travel, the decision to split the businesses aligns with changing traveller preferences and gives Spencer the chance to double down on where she sees the future: personalised, high-touch travel experiences.

“I remain deeply committed to the travel industry,” Penny added.

“This isn’t a farewell — it’s the beginning of a bold new chapter focused on purpose-led travel and entrepreneurial growth.”

At the 2024 National Travel Industry Awards (NTIA), Spencer Travel picked up the gong for Most Outstanding Australian-Owned Travel Management Company.

In an interview with Karryon last year, Penny Spencer gave some invaluable insights into those wanting to step into the luxury space.
