Hot on the heels of Singapore Airlines’ A380 aircraft returning to Melbourne comes the news that SQ will up its Sydney-Singapore services aboard its superjumbo A380 plane to twice daily from today for the first time since January 2020.
Replacing its Airbus A350-900 aircraft, the Singapore Airlines superjumbo adds 1,176 seats per week to the Sydney market to support increased travel demand over the peak holiday period.
SQ now operates four daily flights from Sydney to Singapore, including the two A380 services.
The return of the A380 on SQ221 Singapore–Sydney and SQ232 Sydney–Singapore flights signals a return to pre-COVID A380 operations for the carrier.
Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President South West Pacific Louis Arul said a second A380 to Sydney takes SQ’s seat capacity to almost 100 per cent of its pre-COVID levels.
“The demand for travel remains strong in all segments since borders reopened in November 2021,” Mr Arul said.
“Delivering more seats across our premium cabins as well as increased capacity in Economy Class highlights our longstanding commitment to Sydney and ensures Australians have more opportunities to travel for business or pleasure.”
Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert welcomed the return of a second Singapore Airlines A380.
“Singapore Airlines has been a constant presence at Sydney Airport for more than half a century and stuck with us right through the COVID pandemic,” he said.
“Demand for international travel is strong, especially between Australia and Singapore. This extra capacity gives travellers more choice and will help accelerate Australia’s tourism recovery.”
