Start-up airline buys first A380, plans to buy three more for 2024 launch

A fledgling long-haul carrier whose name, Global Airlines, hints at its ambitions, has acquired its first A380 as it looks to commence passenger services in early to mid 2024.

Assuming it gets off the ground, UK-based Global Airlines will also become the first carrier to launch its inaugural services with the world’s largest passenger jet.

Purchased from Doric Aviation, the superjumbo is the first of four A380s the start-up aims to buy “in the coming months” before commencing trans-Atlantic operations in the northern spring of 2024.

Meanwhile, it says it expects to “formally launch” this [northern] summer – so in the next three or so months – at which point it will detail its “passenger proposition, a number of unique industry partnerships, as well as future route networks and growth aspirations”.

Owned by travel company Holiday Swap, Global Airlines aims to “redefine the travel experience for passengers across all travel classes”.

The broad statements continue on its website, where it also says it is “positioned to provide passengers with an exceptional journey, showcasing its commitment to becoming the preferred choice for long-haul travel”.

“We are revolutionizing commercial flying. We’ve all suffered for far too long with long security queues, late flights, lost luggage, inedible food and constant poor customer service,” it states.

“Global Airlines offers fast relief from the aches and pains associated with commercial air travel. We bring joy at every interaction and delight at every touch point. Take a deep breathe, welcome aboard.”

Global aims to provide three classes of travel: first, business and economy. The superjumbo will offer around 471 seats including private suites in first class.

Right choice?

Interestingly, the carrier’s A380 launch aircraft is losing favour with many, but not all, airlines across the world as an increasing number of operations opt for more fuel efficient twin-engine planes.

However, the airline is confident in its choice, saying the A380 would transport flyers back to the “Golden Age of Air Travel” (despite the aircraft only launching 16 years ago). And all the luck to them – because if there’s anything international travel needs right now, it’s more seats in the air.

“Our aspiration is to be the best way to fly, and the A380, with its unmatched levels of space, comfort, and service, will be absolutely central to achieving that vision,” Global Airlines CEO and founder James Asquith said.

“The purchase of our first aircraft demonstrates that we are well on the way to launching Global.

“The next step is to overhaul and refit the aircraft to our high specification, providing our customers with the best experience in the sky today.

“Acquiring our aircraft rather than leasing showcases our commitment to financial security and resilience from day one.”

Meanwhile, Doric managing partner Sibylle Paehler said the company was “delighted to have worked with James and the team on the acquisition of their first Global Airlines aircraft”.

“Contrary to popular belief, the A380 is widely recognised as the best way to fly, offering unparalleled comfort and features that lead to a unique travel experience,” she said.

“We are proud to have placed this beautiful modern aircraft with a new airline that will soon take to the skies. We are confident that Global Airlines will acquire more A380 aircraft in the near future.”
