Taking To The Tracks: The Overland Signs A New Three Year Agreement

The much-loved Overland train has a new lease on life and will once again be making its way between Adelaide and Melbourne with a new three-year agreement extending the service.

The much-loved Overland train has a new lease on life and will once again be making its way between Adelaide and Melbourne with a new three-year agreement extending the service.

Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions (JBRE) along with support from the Victorian Government have contributed funds to continue to operate the service for another three years.

JBRE Chief Operating Officer Luke Walker said it was a significant day.

“The Overland has been bringing people between Adelaide and Melbourne for more than 130 years and it is a significant part of Australia’s rail history. It brings us great joy to know that it will also play a part in the future of Australian rail.

“We welcome the move to a three-year approach as it will give renewed security of tenure and time review and potentially improve our operating model and service capabilities.”

The Overland will continue to operate with two services a week in each direction from 14 September this year. Importantly, it will provide a lifeline for many regional communities.

“Not only does The Overland encourage interstate tourism, it’s also a vital link for people living in regional communities where flying or travel by car may not be an option,”

Luke Walker, JBRE Chief Operating Officer

“In a post-COVID world, people will look to intra and interstate tourism so to have The Overland up and running again gives people more opportunity.”

“It also links well with The Ghan and the Indian Pacific with The Overland from Melbourne arriving into Adelaide on a Saturday ahead of The Ghan’s Sunday departure. The Overland’s second arrival into Adelaide is a Tuesday, giving guests a two-night overlay before joining the Indian Pacific across the Nullarbor to Perth,” Mr Walker said.

Journey Beyond has implemented a JourneySafe experience plan across all its businesses, which includes a range of enhanced safety initiatives to ensure guest and staff health.

With two service levels, guests can choose from Red Service or Red Premium to travel in comfort between South Australia and Victoria.

Bookings will be available from 8 July.
