The financially troubled Brazilian carrier, Avianca Brasil, is pulling out of the Star Alliance, leaving the group one South American carrier short from next month.

Avianca Brasil will no longer be apart of the Star Alliance from 1 September 2019. Although it shares a name, the carrier’s withdrawal will not affect membership of the Colombian-based Avianca S.A.

The Brazilian carrier’s decision comes a little over six months after it filed for bankruptcy. Despite its rough financial position, Avianca Brasil has continued to operate flights as per usual.

Star Alliance

With its departure, Star Alliance will be down to 27 member airlines, although they include globally recognised brands such as Air New Zealand, United Airlines, Thai Airways and more.

In a statement, the airline alliance stressed that regardless of Avianca Brasil’s membership status, the group will continue to have a strong presence in the Brazilian market. This will be maintained through 11 other member airlines that offer direct services to the country including Air Canada, Air China, Copa Airlines, Lufthansa and more.

“Initially joining Star Alliance in 2015, Avianca Brasil made important contributions to our customer proposition in the Brazilian market, and we regret this unfortunate development.

Jeffrey Goh, Star Alliance Chief Executive

“I wish to stress that the exit of Avianca Brasil in no way affects the membership of Avianca S.A., our valued member based in Bogota, Colombia, which continues to be a significant contributor to the Alliance in South America.”
