Wondering what exactly drives Australians to travel? A new study has shed some light on the main reasons why Aussies will holiday in 2023 – and there are five distinct motivating factors.
The first, according to Agoda’s new International Travel Trends survey, is the desire to reunite with family and friends, which was chosen by 30 per cent of those polled. Given Australia’s multicultural population and the long pause on travel during the pandemic, it’s little wonder we’re looking to reconnect now.
Among those surveyed, Australia was also the destination where travellers will most likely plan a reunion with family or friends.

The second reason, as chosen by 20 per cent of Aussies, is ‘adventure’, for which Australian travellers are well known. Complementing our urge for adventure, we also have a penchant for active travel.
Third among our primary reasons for travelling is ‘food, arts and culture’, which was picked by 14 per cent of those polled. Again, the stop on travel only would have whetted our appetite for this.
Rounding out our top five goals for travel in 2023 are ‘wellness’ and ‘celebrating a milestone’, which garnered 14 per cent and 10 per cent of votes respectively.

Polling over 10,000 adult travellers from Australia, the USA and across Asia, the International Travel Trends survey was conducted in partnership with YouGov between 8-16 July 2022.
While Australians look to reconnect first and foremost, travellers abroad are motivated by different factors. For instance, nearly half (44 per cent) of the Japanese respondents in the survey said they wanted to (re)discover food, arts and culture, while in South Korea and Singapore, travellers were driven by wellness above all else.
