Indigenous Americans may have appreciated the taste of smashed avocado for over 9,000 years, but it wasn’t until modern-day millennials laid it over toasted sourdough & sprinkled it with feta that it really took off as an international foodie craze.

For around half-a-decade, the smashed avocado or smashed avo’ (as it’s so casually referred to in Australia) has entranced millions of not-so-young-anymore people, so-much-so that it took over cafe breakfast menus Australia-wide (seriously, find a cafe that doesn’t include at least one avocado item) and kept a whole generation from buying homes (apparently).

And its popularity isn’t showing signs of slowing down any time soon.

The buttery texture and adaptable taste is so popular that early in 2019, Australia experienced an avocado shortage that sent prices of the green fruit soaring. Foodies were forking out at least AU$4 for one piece… and they weren’t even from the organic selection.

Meanwhile, across the Pacific the breakfast/brunch dish is just as popular, yet the price of the avocado is holding steady at less than a single US dollar or specifically, 96 cents (around AU$1.42).

That’s right, they’re paying half of what we are!

Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board‘s Kathy Smits and Craig Gibbons told KARRYON that avocados are in abundance in Los Angeles and available year-round thanks to shipments from local Californian growers and Mexican farmers.

“It’s a very popular fruit in Los Angeles because our food is heavily influenced by Mexico,” she explained. “So you’ll find it in everything from the healthy twist on toast, to guacamole and margaritas.”

“I always joke that right now the biggest value we offer with the low Australian dollar is the avocado.”
