Qld and NZ top Aussie travellers’ most-wanted guided holiday destinations

New AAT Kings guided holiday consumer research shows domestic travel is here to stay with 48 per cent of Aussie holidaymakers prioritising interstate trips. More than half of the 850 Aussies and Kiwis surveyed said the limited ability to travel during COVID has only ignited their desire to travel.

AAT Kings found that 2023 will be another huge year for travel in Australia and New Zealand, now that borders have reopened fully to all travellers, with 37 per cent planning a trans-Tasman break.

Interest in guided holidays to New Zealand’s South Island has increased by 10 per cent compared to 2021 with 54 per cent of respondents considering a trip, while 49 per cent are considering the North Island now that border restrictions have been lifted.

Within Australia, travellers indicated that Queensland (43%), South Australia (40%) and Northern Territory (40%) were popular guided holiday destinations, attracting the majority of responses.

Around 30 per cent are also considering guided holidays to Perth and Western Australia.

The research findings helped inform AAT Kings’ four new tours as part of the recently released 2023/24 season.

AAT Kings CEO Ben Hall said AAT Kings was in a unique position to help guide the industry in 2023 due to the tour operator’s century-long experience, connections and offerings. 

“We are seeing strong trends towards Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia with the domestic trend to well and truly maintain popularity into 2023. Travellers are also set to get reacquainted with New Zealand with this magnificent country now reopened to all,” he said.
