Travel trends: Aussies are spending more and taking longer holidays

New global data shows Aussies are travelling longer and spending more on summer holidays than holidaymakers in Europe, Canada and the US as regional attitudes towards budgets and destinations affect travel trends.

Europ Assistance, the parent company of Australian travel insurance provider InsureandGo, surveyed 15,000 people from 15 countries, including 1,000 Aussies.

The data revealed that Aussies are trending towards taking longer summer holidays and accumulating more savings for travel than their Northern Hemisphere counterparts.

The cost and duration of long-haul flights from Australia could explain why Aussies save more money for travel and spend more time at their destination.

This also tracks with recent data indicating that 37 per cent of Australians intended to travel overseas in 2023.

Australians take 2.1 weeks on average compared to 1.9 weeks for Europeans, 1.8 weeks for Canadians and 1.6 weeks for Americans.

It also showed Aussies are spending more on summer holidays with an average of AUD$4,602 against the US (AUD$4,544), Canada (AUD$3,633) and Europe (AUD$3,144).

The results revealed less than a quarter (23%) of Aussies would choose a closer destination due to inflation compared with an equal 27 per cent of Europeans, Canadians and Americans.

However, less than one-third (32%) of Australian respondents are willing to give up travel this summer to save money compared to 27 per cent of Europeans.

North Americans proved the most budget conscious with 37 per cent of Americans and 40 per cent of Canadians saying they would refrain from travel in 2023 to save money.

InsureandGo CCO Jonathan Etkind said: “Australians have long been perceived as travel enthusiasts. The research confirms that travel is high on our list of priorities with inflation having a relatively smaller impact on our travel plans.”
