3 in 5 young Aussies say "I do" to a destination wedding

Getting hitched overseas or interstate continues to gain momentum with 58 per cent of Australians considering or have had a destination wedding. The trend is particularly popular among young Aussies with 70 per cent of Gen Z and 55 per cent of younger Millennials keen on tying the knot in a memorable location.

The Skyscanner survey also found that budget is a major factor in the decision to have a destination wedding with 75 per cent of nuptials planned between seven months and two years and flight tickets booked well in advance.

While more than half (56%) are keen on a traditional wedding, almost one-quarter (23%) of Aussies surveyed would also consider eloping to cut costs.

And in more good news for advisors, 65 per cent of respondents said they would consider tacking on their honeymoon with a destination wedding to make their money go even further.

And if you’ve had an invite to an overseas or interstate nuptial occasion, you’re in good company with 40 per cent of Australians having attended a destination wedding.

Unsurprisingly, Skyscanner data reveals that loved-up duos are opting for laidback beach or romantic city locations for a destination wedding with 42 per cent of Aussies choosing a sentimental or meaningful place to get hitched.

Think Mamma Mia! on a Greek Isle, Anyone But You set in Sydney, Ticket to Paradise (Bali, ahem, TNQ) and other trending rom-coms for inspo.

Trending beach destinations for Australians to tie the knot include Bali, Honolulu, Gold Coast, Thailand and Fiji, while close-to-home locations such as New Zealand are also popular.

For those keen on city lights, the always romantic cities of Paris and Rome are an obvious inclusion as well as Adelaide and Dubai.

In other research, two in three Aussies indicated they would prefer to spend more on the honeymoon than the big day, while a new global trend points to couples double-dipping with pre- and post-honeymoons.
