More than half of Australian travellers are willing to scale back their fave daily indulgences to travel with 51 per cent prepared to sacrifice takeaway coffees at home to save for overseas trips.
As cost-of-living expenses rise, recent NAB consumer sentiment data reveals that 65 per cent of Aussies are making conscious efforts to cut back on discretionary spending.
This includes eating out at restaurants (57%), treats such as takeaway coffee and snacks (52%), entertainment (49%) and food delivery services (43%).
In addition, Aussies are reducing holidays (45%) and car journeys to save on petrol costs (46%), indicating a preference for prioritising international trips over domestic travel.
It’s a different story to last year when 74 per cent of Aussies said they would keep their creature comforts despite the ‘cozzie livs’ crunch.
Save for overseas trips and go further
New Skyscanner research shows savvy Aussie savers are adding an average of up to $370 each month or more than $3,800 per year to their holiday fund by nixing their daily takeaway caffeine fix.
Based on savings of $370 per month, Skyscanner crunched the data and found travellers can fly from Melbourne to Malaysia from $412, Sydney to South Korea from $679 or Brisbane to Vietnam from $477 with two months of savings sacrifices.
With four months of scrimping, Aussies can stretch their savings even further, such as Melbourne to Austria from $1,447, Sydney to Canada from $1,404 and Brisbane to Italy from $1,198.
Best-value destinations for 2024
Skyscanner has also ranked the global destinations that are trending cheaper in 2024 than last year for flights, accommodation and car hire to save for overseas trips.
These include Faro, Portugal (23% price drop), Nice, France (19% price drop), Dalaman, Türkiye (13% price drop) and LA (10% price drop).
