Almost nine in 10 Australians (87%) plan to travel solo in the next 12 months with freedom, flexibility and independence the main motivators for going it alone. And easy-to-reach Asia-Pacific destinations are topping solo travel wish lists.
Scoot’s whitepaper on solo travel showed 81 per cent of Australians embarked on a solo travel trip in the past year with more than half (54%) going on two or more trips on their own.
The survey also highlighted a cultural shift among Aussie travellers towards experience-led holidays, particularly for female solo travellers.
Solo getaways have become a ritual for self-care and self-discovery, while the research also shows solo travellers favour Asia for its affordability and cultural immersion. Almost two in five Aussies (40%) consider affordability as a top factor for air travel.
Excluding domestic locations, these are the top 10 APAC destinations for Aussie solo travellers in 2025.

Topping the list is New Zealand, a close-to-home destination for Aussie solo travellers and a popular choice to reconnect with friends and family.
Asian holiday hotspots also rank highly in the top five APAC destinations for Aussie solo travellers with Japan (2), Singapore (3), Thailand (4) and China (5), underlining the trend for easy-to-reach destinations that offer rich experiences.

Rounding out the top 10 are Vietnam (6), Malaysia (7), Indonesia (8), Philippines (9) and South Korea and India tying for 10th spot.
These choices indicate a desire for personal connections, vibrant cultures and nature escapes, reflective of the most popular types of solo trips.

The findings also reflect the rise in mindfulness and wellness, highlighting how travel, especially solo travel, has evolved from a leisure activity to a trip into self-discovery.
