Trump wins US election and Americans now want to leave

Although it may seem like some kind of a bad dream, the reality is that Donald Trump will be the 45th President of the United States. And not everyone is happy about that at all.

Although it may seem like some kind of a bad dream, the reality is that Donald Trump will be the 45th President of the United States. And not everyone is happy about that at all.

Only moments after 3pm yesterday, Canada’s official immigration website crashed due to server load – the result of millions of American users visiting the website in search of information on how to leave the USA after it became clear that Trump would win.

Although it is now up and running (however, with a warning displayed on the top of the screen about possible delays when using the website), the website was out of action, displaying “server error” for hours last night.

And according to News.com.au, it isn’t just Canada that Americans are looking to migrate to. Both Australia and New Zealand are also on the radar for those Americans not happy living in an US governed by a man some have labeled as sexist, racist and just stupid.

Data from Google is showing that searches for “Move to Australia” and “Move to New Zealand” spiked for a few hours last night. For Australia, many of these searches came from Colorado, Kentucky, Tennessee, Washington and Virginia. For New Zealand, most searches originated in Oregon, Colorado, Washington, Missouri and Virginia.

There was some concern yesterday about a possible large-scale violet backlash against the election results, and Australians were advised to have an exit plan in case things turned sour. Yet so far, there have only been pockets of outrage across the USA, such as small protests in Portland and California.

Before the election, there was also serious concern over the impact the US election would have on share markets around the world. A Trump win was expected to throw the ASX into a plunge and lower the value of the American dollar. So far, the stock markets have indeed been affected, with the Australian market’s SPI 200 futures index down 1.8 per cent.

It’s still too early to say what effect the election will have on the Australian travel industry, but stay tuned to KarryOn and we’ll bring you the latest development as they come to light.

How surprised were you after last night’s election results?
