Virgin Australia has rolled out a refreshed inflight menu just in time for the busy summer travel period, and added a new twist for frequent flyers.

For the first time, travellers can now pay for onboard food and drinks using Velocity Points, marking a first for any Australian airline.

The update comes as Virgin prepares for a bumper holiday season, with nearly 6.4 million seats set to operate across its domestic and short-haul international network between December and February.

According to Virgin, the new menus showcase bold, seasonal flavours and local ingredients, with a focus on Australian produce and variety across both business and economy cabins.

In business class, guests will find rotating dishes that range from homestyle eggs with Cajun potatoes at breakfast to lemongrass chicken with herbed rice or beef in black bean sauce for lunch and dinner.

Economy travellers can dig into new buy-on-board favourites such as grazing snack boxes, Tim Tams, Byron Bay Cookies and Batched Strawberry Gin Sours, while still enjoying complimentary tea, coffee and water on all flights.

Virgin Australia General Manager of Product and Customer Strategy, Ali Dunn, said the updates arrive at the perfect time and build on a year of product innovation, following launches like neighbour-free seating, baggage tracking and pets in cabin flights.

“Summer is our busiest travel period, so it’s the right time to introduce our wonderful new menus that deliver more choice and flavours that Australians love,” she said.

“Whether it’s enjoying a grazing box, sipping a premium cocktail, or having a classic eggs Benedict in business class, the new menus are elevated and unmistakably Virgin Australia.

“We are committed to making travel more wonderful – from pets in cabin flights and baggage tracking, to being the first airline in Australia to offer points redemptions inflight, our new menus are a testament to that relentless focus.”

Over the past year, Virgin sold more than 5.4 million food and beverage items inflight, with cheese and crackers topping the charts. Now, with its summer refresh and pay with points option, the airline says it’s giving travellers even more ways to make flying, and snacking, a little more rewarding.
