Tasmania has removed border restrictions for the Greater Brisbane region and much of Sydney, signalling a return of travellers eager to sample Tassie’s delights.

Some good news today, with Tasmania announcing that they are dropping coronavirus border restrictions with Greater Brisbane and much of Sydney.

The Greater Brisbane region will shift from medium risk to low risk from 12.01 am on Friday 22 January, Premier Peter Gutwein announced on Thursday.

It means that travel between Queensland and Tasmania can occur again without restrictions.

“Queenslanders entering the state will no longer need to quarantine,” Mr Gutwein said.

Tasmania had declared Greater Brisbane high risk on January 8 after an outbreak of the more contagious UK COVID-19 strain and forced all recent arrivals into isolation.

Those people still in quarantine will be allowed out at 12.01 am Friday.

“I want to thank them for their patience during this. It’s been a challenging period of time,” Mr Gutwein said.

Twenty-four local government areas in Greater Sydney have also been downgraded from medium to low risk.

However, 10 council areas in the city’s west, including Canterbury and Parramatta, remain a medium risk, meaning people who have recently been in those areas must still quarantine upon arrival.

It is the only remaining quarantine requirement for domestic travellers entering Tasmania.

Both Queensland and NSW recorded no locally acquired cases on Thursday.
