Travelport will be one of the first global distribution systems (GDS) to give Travel Agents the ability to select a non-binary gender option for their clients.
From 1 June 2019, Travelport will introduce a new non-binary code ‘X’, which can be selected over ‘M’ or ‘F’ for flyers who don’t identify as either male or female.
Travelport said the advanced passenger information will be introduced for destinations that require a selection, including Algeria, Canada, China (except Hong Kong), Iran, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, South Africa, Spain, Syria, Thailand, USA and the United Arab Emirates.
As progressive as the move is on Travelport’s part, it does however require the 480 airlines on the platform to also adopt the code. Among those who have already agreed to do so include United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Other are expected to soon follow.
Another barrier for non-binary travellers is that the ‘X’ code will need to match their passport or identity document. In other words, if it isn’t on their passport, it can’t on their plane ticket.
Thankfully, several countries have already started to adopt alternatives to ‘M’ and ‘F’, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, India, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, Nepal, The Netherlands and Pakistan.
“As a company committed to diversity and promoting travel for all, we are delighted that the new code for nonbinary gender passengers has now been introduced.”
Gordon Wilson, Travelport President & CEO
“We hope more airlines will provide this option to ensure their customers are fully respected and welcomed. For us ‘X’ marks a vote for diversity, dignity and respect.”
