Switched on Devices will see selfies soar

With the announcement that electronic devices can be kept switched on during take-off and landing on Qantas and Virgin Australia flights, travel experts are predicting a rise in the in-flight self-portrait.

With the announcement that electronic devices can be kept switched on during take-off and landing on Qantas and Virgin Australia flights, travel experts are predicting a rise in the in-flight self-portrait.

As a result of the recent launch of gate-to-gate use of electronic devices in flight mode, wotif.com are expecting to see even more in-flight selfies hitting our social newsfeeds.

However, the craze is already a popular travel trend among Australians.

The selfie stats

According to a recent survey by wotif.com, one in two Aussies confess to taking holiday selfies.

Out of the 7000 surveyed, 56 per cent revealed they take one or more selfie a day on a holiday.

While the holiday selfie can be found on most Gen Y travellers’ phones, the travel selfie has also been embraced by Gen X and not completely shunned by the baby boomers.

“More than 80 per cent of people aged between 18 and 29, or the Gen Y demographic, take holiday selfies,” says the brand’s spokesperson, Kirsty La Bruniy.

“Of the 80 per cent, 32 per cent take between three to five selfies a day when away,” La Bruniy says. “Twelve per cent can’t get enough of the selfie and snap a minimum of 10.”

Among the Gen X demographic, 63 per cent are regular holiday selfie snappers. Thirty two per cent take a selfie a day. Twenty two per cent take three to five a day. A mere five per cent snap a minimum of 10 ‘selfies’ a day.

The baby boomers were the most surprising demographic with 40 per cent admitting to taking holiday selfies.

The craze, however, seems to drop off the cusp when looking at the 66+ age demographic.

“They were the least likely to take a selfie on holiday,” La Bruniy says.
