Surfing video goes next level with drones

Is it possible to experience surfing without actually getting into the water? The answer perhaps, is almost.

Is it possible to experience surfing without actually getting into the water? The answer perhaps, is almost.

There was a time (not that long ago) when us non surfers could only look on from afar and wonder just what those seemingly mad surfer folk were experiencing way out amongst the big waves.

It looks so easy i’d think. And then i’d get out there. “Ah yes I see now” i’d say before being engulfed by whitewater having not even really left the shallows.

But since the still relatively recent creation of the GoPro, we’ve been invited along for the ride when it comes to surfing videos. A personal invitation to take in a visual smorgasbord through the mighty waves and to get an insight as to just what all the fuss is about. It’s point of view style and has virtually put us in the hot seat as if we were there, to experience the all encompassing waves. Almost.

The GoPro has revolutionised and democratised the entire travel and indeed to an extent video production industry overnight with it’s pocket size, great price, accessibility and outstanding HD/4K digital recording. It’s innovation personified.

So what next? Remote controlled drones have come along as the next big thing and the results are equally, if not more incredible. A drone can fly at low altitudes smoothly and create dynamic shots event a helicopter couldn’t pull off.

Check out this absolutely stunning video shot with a drone in Newport Beach, California at famous surf spot ‘The Wedge’. Pump up the sound and hit full screen. It’s worth it.

Do you think drones will take off (Scuse the pun) and what will that mean for society if they do?
