Canada gets set for party of the year - Canada Day

Thousands of travellers flock to the Canada's capital city of Ottawa to celebrate the 148 Canada Day on 1 July 2015.

Thousands of travellers flock to the Canada’s capital city of Ottawa to celebrate the 148 Canada Day on 1 July 2015.

The event takes place on three official sites: Ottawa’s Parliament Hill, Major’s Hill Park (Ottawa) and Jacques Cartier Park (Quebec), celebrating the anniversary of Confederation, when Canada became a country separate from the British Empire.

Crowds will gather as dawn breaks, ready for the 9.00am flag raising and Changing of the Guard ceremonies.

A full day and night of free cultural entertainment follows, including musical performances, children’s activities, culminating with a giant fireworks display after dark.

The revelry is matched all over the country with each major city and regional areas celebrating their unique communities and histories.

The city of St John, in the Atlantic province of New Brunswick, began its celebrations 13 days prior to Canada Day with a sea-to-sea theme, reflecting the nation’s motto, A Mari Usque ad Mare.

The region celebrates one Canadian territory or province each day, celebrating each unique heritage with events such as the annual “Poutinerie Challenge”, a nod to the province’s Francophone heritage.

With the 150th anniversary just two years away, preparations are already underway for the biggest party of them all.
