What if you’re not in Australia? Fear not, our far away friends, we’ve compiled a list of ways Australia Day is celebrated around the world.
1. G’day USA
Australians are definitely taking over America with more and more Australians making a mark in their popular culture. G’Day USA is a public diplomacy program that promotes Australian capabilities in the US. Australia Day this year will be celebrated in San Francisco with a culinary adventure. There’s also a touch of Hollywood glamour during G’Day USA’s Australia Day Gala on the 31st of January which also features AACTA International Awards presented by QANTAS.
2. London, our home away from home
There are so many Aussies in London that there are plenty of options to get your Australia Day fix. Head down to one of our favourite hipster destinations, Shoreditch for an Australia Day bar crawl. In fact, there’s a slathering of Aussie pub-crawls happening all over London so get in on the festivities. For a more novel idea, head down to Bloomsbury Bowling and have a bowl while enjoying Aussie beers, bands and DJs with sausage sizzles for good measure.
3. BBQ in Shanghai
The Australian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai is hosting a BBQ for the family this Australia day at the aptly named Kakadu (famous for proper outback food – kangaroo, crocodile and emus). They’re claiming to have the best BBQ in town as well as free flowing beer and wine. It’s also family friendly with kid’s activities and even a jumping castle.
4. Beer in Berlin turns into Pale
Belushi’s Berlin is hosting ‘Berlin’s biggest Australia Day Party 2015’, think Cooper’s Pale Ale and Bundy Rum with Triple J’s Hottest 100 blasting in the background. They’ve even imported proper meat pies, but if that’s not your thing – they’ve recreated our famous “the works” burger.
