Fab-u-lous fashionistas and colourful canines ruled the red-sand runway in the Queensland outback at the 2022 Birdsville Big Red Bash, the world’s most remote music festival, raising almost $25,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).
The RFDS Bashville Drags race and Fashions in the Desert are some of the highlights of the annual Birdsville Big Red Bash, running from 5-7 July 2022, which sees the tiny town’s population of around 150 swell to thousands for the family and dog-friendly festival.
This year’s festival has welcomed a record crowd of 11,000 revellers of which more than 800 competed for the ‘Queen of the Desert’ title.

Participants were required to dress in ‘Priscilla – Queen of the Desert’ theme for the 765m drag race that starts atop the 40m-high Big Red dune – the tallest in the world – and also hosts sunrise yoga amid the vast Simpson Desert.
Music is also front and centre at the Birdsville Big Red Bash with top Aussie artists such as Noiseworks, Kate Ceberano, Missy Higgins, Sarah McLeod, Steve Balbi, Chocolate Starfish, Bjorn Again, Melanie Dyer and more.

The festival brings an estimated $15 million in economic benefit to regional and outback Queensland, while the renowned Birdsville Bakery reports daily average sales of 1,500 curried camel pies and 900 coffees as festivalgoers travel through to the event.

Since its inception in 2016, the Big Red Bash has raised more than $37,000 for the RFDS.
