The travel industry received a sneak peek of what it would be like to take a train trip around Ecuador, at a special event held in Sydney last night.

Billed by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s top five “unmissable rail journeys”, Ecuadorian operator, Tren Ecuador, hosted industry friends at the Velluto wine bar in Potts Point.

Peter Power from Aviareps’ Australian office, which was recently appointed to represent Ecuador’s Ministry of Tourism in  Australia, also addressed the crowd, which included agents and wholesalers specialising in tours to Ecuador and South America.

During the event, agents were updated on Tren Ecuador’s spectacular 448 kilometre rail journey from Quito in the Andes to the tropical jungle around Guayaquil on the Pacific coast.

The four-day trip features active volcanoes, snow-capped mountains, rugged gorges, colourful villages and the famous Devil’s Nose – a rugged geological formation where the steep, zig-zagging track is widely accepted as the toughest piece of railroad in the world.

Passengers stay in lodges each night and the heritage trains offer open observation cars and dining, with steam locomotives hauling the carriages for part of the journey.
