Discovering hidden treasures in Peru

It was a Peruvian escape for five lucky travel agents that were invited to join PromPeru on a familiarisation of the country.

The eight-day itinerary took consultants to the capital Lima, Cusco, Puno, the Sacred Valley and Macchu Pichu.

Agents –  Donna Kranas from Savenio, Laura Dean from MP Travel, Penny Gordon from Concierge Traveller, Zoe Clarke from World Journeys, Michelle Barnes from Holland Clarke & Beatson along with their hosts, Prom Peru’s Australia Market Specialist Jennifer Pizarro and PromPeru’s Australian Account Director Sarah Thornton  – were treated to a luxury itinerary, that showed off the destination’s rich culture and history, stunning natural landscapes and culinary delights.

Starting in Lima they explored the park filled Miraflores and San Isidro districts, tried their hand at mixology, making Peru’s national drink, a Pisco Sour, and enjoyed a traditional Peruvian meal amidst pre Incan ruins in Huaca Pucllana.

They headed to the Sacred Valley and explored the archaeological wonder of Machu Picchu followed by two days exploring Cusco and surrounds.

The group then flew to Puno, and discovered Lake Titcaca’s floating islands as well as Taquile before heading back to Lima for the 2015 Peru Travel Mart.

Held from 15-17 May at the Westin Lima Hotel, Lima, Peru, the 22nd edition of the annual Peru Travel Mart (PTM) welcomed a record number of international  buyers and local exhibitors.

Organised by PromPeru and Canataur (Peru’s National Chamber of Tourism), it is the most important event on the calendar for the tourism industry in Peru.

One hundred and sixty four international buyers attended, and 113 exhibitors from around Peru, a 24 percent increase on 2014 figures.

International attendees came from over 20 countries across Europe, North and South America and Asia Pacific – including Australia and New Zealand buyers.

Vendors from across Peru included hoteliers, tour operators, cruise and transportation operators, government agencies, museums, and airlines.

Magali Silva Velarde-Álvarez, the Minister for Commerce and Tourism (Mincetur) and President of the PromPeru Board, said that 134 of a total 164 International buyers (81 percent) travelled to PTM for the first time in 2015, indicating they see Peru as a great alternative travel destination.
