Start up the car, pump up the tunes and get ready to drive through some of Australia’s most iconic landscapes.

Start up the car, pump up the tunes and get ready to drive through some of Australia’s most iconic landscapes.

Underrated and undiscovered, Western Australia should be at the top of your list for your next road trip. Whether you’re looking for a short trip along beautiful coastal roads, or a rugged outback adventure lasting weeks, WA has something to offer every type of traveller.

Being Australia’s largest state, it can be difficult to know where to start, but don’t worry we’ve got you covered! If you’re looking for a place to start below is the perfect itinerary which allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty, splendour and deliciousness that is the south west WA.

Ladies & gentleman, start your engines

First things first, get yourself to the gorgeous capital of Perth and pick up your people mover. Then start driving south to Margaret River via the coast or country and enjoy the scenic 3 and a half hour drive to one of Australia’s best little towns. Foodies will be in their element with a diverse range of wine tastings, boutique breweries, fine restaurants, rich chocolate and delicious cheeses. After recovering from your food coma, spend the rest of your time admiring the art galleries, sunbaking on the sandy beaches and walking among some of the world’s tallest hardwood trees.

The road to Albany

After 2-3 nights enjoying the Margaret River Region, start driving south again towards Albany. Break up the day’s drive by stopping at Jewel Cave, an ancient limestone cave, home to one of the longest straw stalactites found in any tourist cave in Australia. Alternatively, drive down to Cape Leeuwin and witness the point where the Indian Ocean and South Ocean meet.

Exploring Esperance

The next stop of your road trip will be Esperance, the perfect spot for anyone who enjoys the sun, the sea and adventure (so that’s everyone, right?). Unpack your swimsuit and race down to the beautiful beaches where you will experience some of the most vibrantly blue water you’ll ever see in your life. Then brush off the sand and enjoy a relaxing drive along the 40km of the Great Ocean Drive (The perfect time to play the beach boys on repeat).

Cape Le Grand National Park

While you’re close by, take a short drive to explore the Cape Le Grand National Park. Be awe inspired by the white sands, clear blue waters and lunar-like granite peaks. If you’re feeling like making a new friend, the chilled out kangaroos relaxing in the sun will be happy to make your acquaintance.

Surfs up!

On your way back to Perth, why not take a little detour on your return and visit the remarkable Wave Rock. Standing at 15 meters high it’s a long rock formation that looks like a wave breaking in the ocean. It has to be seen to be believed. Then, finish your return journey to Perth, hand back the keys to the car, and reminisce about the great road trip you’ve just had (play “Life is a Highway” by Tom Cochrane for the full effect).
