Yes it’s true. Thanks to the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica, we’re seriously considering requesting an uncomfortable middle seat on purpose – just to get our upgrade to an ocean-view room in LA LA land.
Getting the middle seat is pretty much everyone’s worst nightmare. All that squishing, awkward elbow grinding and seat angst.
Ugh. It’s enough to put you off flying forever. All we can say here at KarryOn is “Hello Restavit”.

So thankfully, Santa Monica’s Shore Hotel – an uber cool, eco-friendly beachfront spot just a ‘neck pillow’ throw from Santa Monica Pier has come to the rescue with a quirky PR campaign.
The hotel has started offering any poor middle-seat passengers who fly into LAX a free upgrade to an ocean-view room upon arrival.
Yes a free upgrade no less. Nice one.
Worth sitting in the middle for?
Of course, the hotel notes that all upgrades are subject to room availability and to score the benefits, you have to book a room at the hotel before you land, and show proof that you spent the flight crammed between two people so make sure you keep your boarding pass handy.
But hey, gazing out over the Pacific lapping the pier at sunset and having a real LA LA land moment for essentially nothing?
We reckon that’s a fair payback for being squished for however many silly hours over from Australia or anywhere else for that matter. Well almost.
