The Ghan‘s storied history

The legend originated in the 1830s when Afghan cameleers arrived in Australia and blazed a permanent trail through the Red Centre.

Originally known as The Afghan Express in a nod to its namesake, the first steam train trip left Adelaide on 4 August 1929 with 100 passengers on a two-day journey bound for Stuart (now Alice Springs).

The Ghan was always intended to travel from Adelaide to Darwin. With the last section of the rail line finally completed in 2004,  it embarked on the first journey from Adelaide to Darwin on 1 February 2004.

Over the past 95 years, many elements of that inaugural trip have changed with the onboard experience evolving from a basic passenger service to an all-inclusive, multi-day experiential journey that showcases regional food and wine and remote locations.

The most recent evolution is the introduction of Gold Premium, launched in 2024 for passengers on The Ghan and Great Southern for a product option between Journey Beyond’s Gold and Platinum offerings.

Journey Beyond Executive General Manager of Sales and Partnerships Alicia Triggs thanked all the trade partners and travel advisors who have supported the journey over the years.

The Ghan is such an important part of Australian history and culture. We promise to continue the legacy and deliver an exceptional experience that’s unique to Australia,” she said.

Journey Beyond recently announced a new rail-sail package with Coral Expeditions that pairs The Ghan with a Kimberley cruise, launching in 2025.
