Leaving your phone behind in your local pub might not necessarily end up with an identity theft; however possible, but travelling overseas or even domestically often means you all of a suddenly have to pay more attention to your belongings.

Travelling is all about experiencing new places, trying new things and perhaps getting lost finding new ways out. However losing your social media logins, bank account details, an entire phone book and a bunch of personal images and messages can be devastating as well as dangerous.

While travelling, we always make sure our passport is with us, tickets aren’t misplaced and a suitcase more or less packed. However, we tend to neglect our iPhones because we are so used to having them. We don’t realizing that there are people who might want to get their hands on your iPhone and not for the purpose of an emergency call.

There are many amazing stories of people losing their belongings which were returned to them by good citizens. However instead of hoping for more people like that, we are truly better of being prepared for any situation.

 

8 Useful ways of keeping safe and sound while travelling

1. First of all, go to the local police station and report the incident. In some countries, phones get stolen to be sold on black markets. Police could often track such transactions. If lost and someone returns it, police would also get on to that for you.

2. Contact your provider to let them know what happened to avoid potential fees in case your current phone holder is already skyping Alaska from Russia.

3. Delete your data as quickly as you can. If it’s taking too long to recover your phone, you may want to delete your personal information. You can do this over the web using Apple’s Find My iPhone tool, a free part of iCloud. You’ll need an iCloud account, and to have enabled Find My iPhone on your device, before it gets stolen, of course.

4. Another cool trick is to set your iPhone so that if someone tries your password 10 times and fails to unlock it, the phone will automatically delete all the data. Top gun protection!

5. Get a tracking tag. Especially if you are planning around the world trip or even domestically, you could really help yourself by getting a tracking tag. No James Bond business but an accessible piece of technology making your life easier.

6. Call your iPhone insurance company, if you have one, to notify them of a stolen or lost handset.

7. Let your your work, family and friends know as well. You don’t want to stress your mother over random night prank calls or upset your boss with inappropriate messages. Protect your reputation!

8. Last but not the least, when all the steps are completed, calm down, grab a beer or two and tell your co-travelers a funny story of how you lost your iPhone.
