Qatar’s Doha is filled with behemoth architectural wonders and a sense of rejuvenation and prosperity all set on a beautiful desert landscape.
A juxtaposition of desert landscapes with futuristic skyscrapers, Doha is a fascinating city determined to become a tourist hub to rival its neighbours in the Emirates.
There are new hotels, tourist attractions and museums opening up constantly, all backed by Qatar’s great wealth.
Museum of Islamic Art
Set on its own purpose-built island, the Museum of Islamic Art is a work of art in itself, designed by the architect of the Louvre Pyramid, IM Pei. It’s a post-modern interpretation of a fortress.
The Museum has the largest collection of Islamic art in the world featuring textiles, ceramics, enamel and glass. Wear appropriate clothing as you may be refused admission.
Water Activities
It may not be the first thing you think of when Qatar comes to mind but there are loads of water activities in Doha.
Get your swimmers on and head to Regatta Sailing Academy, which offers sailing courses for Adults & Kids. You’re even able to charter yachts there, if you’re feeling fancy.
If you’re just after a nice relaxing afternoon fishing, book a fishing trip at Katara Beach or at the Sheraton Doha.

Souq Waqif
There are many outdoor souqs in the older parts of town. The social heart of Doha is Souq Waqif – a place to shop, dine or simply sit at the many attractive cafes. T
here’s been a souq in this spot for centuries, but it’s been redeveloped to look like a 19th century souq.
It’s a great place to look for national Qatari dress, spices, perfumes and oud. Don’t forget that bargaining is a way of life in the Arab region, so get to haggling.

Villagio Mall
If you’re after more of a mall experience, try Villagio, themed to resemble the city of Venice, complete with a 150 metre long canal and gondola boat ride; Villagio is one of Qatar’s largest malls with over 220 stores, a large food court, and restaurants.
If you want to spoil yourself (or your loved ones), you must visit Via Domo a section of the mall dedicated to luxury brands.
Eating in Doha

IDAM, Museum of Islamic Art
Whilst Qatar doesn’t quite have a distinctive cuisine there are plenty of options available in this cosmopolitan city.
Visit IDAM located on the top floor of the Museum of Islamic Art with a menu created by three-star Michelin French chef Alain Ducasse.
It’s Mediterranean with a touch of the Middle East; make sure to try the camel meat which is braised for several days.

Strata, Intercontinental Doha
For the best views of Doha, head up to Level 55 and 56 of the Intercontinental and visit Strata, the highest restaurant, lounge and bar in Doha.
It’s all about opulent dining with the tasting menu including champagne, caviar, oysters and lobster.
Where to stay
All the major players have now built stunning hotels in Doha, but we can’t go past the Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl.
Located on its own secluded island and is the ultimate in luxury. It features 281 rooms with 69 suites, 2 presidential and 2 royal suites. There are 6 restaurants, 2 cafes and al fresco poolside dining. The Spa by Clarins will also be opening early this year.
