Discover why the adventures don’t end when summer does in Greater Zion.

If you thought Greater Zion was a one-season, one-park adventure, think again. This bucket-list Utah destination delivers charm year-round, and warmer winter temperatures mean that by day, by night, by season, it’s got everything you need for an iconic holiday.

Zion National Park is the jewel in the region’s crown, a breathtaking destination where the scenery belies belief, the activities wow, and everyone leaves with lifelong happy memories.

Zoom out and you’ll find delights outside the national park, including more state parks, fun, and the warmth and culture of small-town communities.

Something for everyone

Whether you’re a solo traveller, ready to road trip, a luxury lover, or keen for a multi-gen vacation, Greater Zion has something for everyone. Here’s what you need to know:

The Narrows in winter

The Narrows is a must-visit itinerary stop in any season. There’s a secret, though, one few know about: it’s even more awe-inspiring in the cooler months, where fewer visitors afford a deeper connection to all the majesty and peace of the canyon.

In winter, The Narrows transforms into a fairytale scene where the Virgin River winds between 300-metre canyon walls bathed in crystalline light. The serenity here in winter is unrivalled.

Epic hiking, year-round

From the exhilarating climb of Angels Landing to the tranquil Emerald Pools and rugged backcountry trails, Zion National Park’s trails deliver unforgettable views no matter the season.

The cooler temperatures in the shoulder and winter months make these iconic routes even more rewarding. And did you know many of the park’s trails are stroller and wheelchair accessible? It’s why the park is such a win for multigenerational travel.

Via ferrata adventures

For thrill seekers, Greater Zion offers some of North America’s most awe-inspiring via ferrata routes.

Secured climbing paths line sheer cliffs, inviting bold travellers to climb and conquer. With the help of cables, ladders, and expert guides, of course.

World-class dark skies

Renowned for its pristine night skies, unmatched stargazing, and astrophotography, Greater Zion’s wows are limited to the natural wonder underfoot.

Limited light pollution and a commitment to preserving darkness allow the desert to become a natural observatory. Time at either of the region’s two Dark Sky International designations is the perfect finale to your day’sexplorations.

Will you witness the million-star views at Zion National Park, a Dark Sky Park, or step out of your accommodation in Springdale, a Dark Sky Community? Our suggestion? Do both!

Home sweet home

Springdale is the ideal base camp for your Greater Zion explorations and beyond, with the towering red-rock walls visible right from your accommodation.

Nestled at the entrance to Zion National Park, Springdale has everything you need for a relaxing stay.

Charming cafés for a caffeine hit before you hit the trailhead (some are minutes from your accommodation). Art galleries that complement the inspiration you feel in nature’s playground. Gear shops kit out your adventures. Local dining ready to refuel you before and after every adventure. Round out your days with a rejuvenating soak under the stars, only minutes away at the nearby natural hot springs.

While Zion National Park may be the region’s most famous attraction – and Utah’s first national park – there’s a world of discovery beyond, with so many things to do.

Scenic byways & nearby parks

Beyond the main canyon, the region reveals more beauty as you follow scenic drives to reach more treasures. See the region ablaze with autumnal colours at Kolob Canyon and Kolob Terrace, in a quieter corner of Zion National Park.

Drive 45 minutes west to stand in awe where the red and white Navajo sandstone meets ancient lava flow at Snow Canyon State Park.

Adventure activities

The land of adrenaline is calling

While hiking is popular here, it’s not the only way to get your adventure on.

The Land of Exhilaration beckons, inviting you to witness the region’s striking desert or alpine terrain. Follow world-class mountain biking trails, rock climb ancient red boulders, or sign up for canyoneering, horseback riding,or an off-road adventure.

Cultural experiences

Small communities across the region celebrate authentic Western heritage, with local art galleries, farm-to-table dining, and stories rooted in both pioneer and Indigenous history.

There’s even the majestic Tuacahn Amphitheatre, where you can watch Broadway-calibre shows under the stars in Padre Canyon. Head indoors to Hafen Theater’s performances when it’s cooler.

Year-round events & festivals

Every season in Greater Zion holds fabulous celebrations, from outdoor recreation festivals to cultural gatherings.

The St. George Art Festival and Washington County Fair are great additions to your spring itinerary. In September, why not catch the Dixie Round Up Rodeo in September? And come October, the region’s premier athletic events are on.
