Why you should stop over in Brunei the next time you fly

An intoxicating mix of steamy rainforests, wildlife, delicious food and evocative and grand Islamic architecture – diminutive Brunei sure packs a mighty punch for a country of its size!

An intoxicating mix of steamy rainforests, wildlife, delicious food and evocative and grand Islamic architecture – diminutive Brunei sure packs a mighty punch for a country of its size!

Which makes it a perfect alternative stop-over destination en-route to the rest of Asia and even as far as Dubai and Europe.

I mean, everything this South East Asian country has to offer is pretty much outside the airport arrival terminal, meaning more time for spotting proboscis monkeys, shopping in exotic markets, or simply just stretching your legs before hopping back on the plane.

Oh, and then there’s Royal Brunei’s (Brunei’s national airline) incredibly awesome fares to the other side of the world, such as return flights ex Australia to London for just $995 on sale now.

If that last reason isn’t enough to convince you to stopover in Brunei the next time you fly, here are another four…

1. Brunei lies in the heart of Borneo

23

Who says you need to travel for hours or even days through dense rainforest to enter a world of unspoilt nature and wildlife? In Brunei, you only need to travel for 15 minutes from the capital Bandar Seri Begawan before you enter the Tasek Lama Recreational Park, which is as wild and unspoilt as it gets.

Nearly three-quarters of Brunei lies under tropical rainforest, and thanks to its oil-riches the country doesn’t need to make ends meet by chopping down its trees to make room for palm oil plantations. In fact, Brunei is committed to preserving its native fauna and flora, and the result is a natural wonderland that’s everything you’d ever imagined Borneo to be.

2. Stopping here takes the pain out of flying long-haul

36

Unlike traditional stopover destinations like Hong Kong, Bangkok and Dubai, Brunei is much closer to home, which means you can break up long-haul journeys into more comfortable legs and arrive at your destination totally refreshed. For example, Brunei is only six hours and 50 minutes away from Melbourne, and for those continuing on to Europe, a stop-over in Dubai en-route to London breaks up the flying yet again.

Oh, and then there’s the ultra-modern fleet Royal Brunei use on all its services ex Australia, including four Dreamliner 787s. Yeah, you’ll be comfortable all right…

3. You can monkey around with the animals in Brunei

25

Brunei is home to a diverse range of animal life, including one of the most interesting looking animals in the world: the Proboscis Monkey. Here you can see this endangered animal in its natural habitat munching on fruit, nuts and the odd caterpillar, so don’t forget your camera!

If monkeys ain’t your thing, there are over 300 types of birds, heaps of reptiles (including vipers) and the Borneo horned frog to keep you reaching for your camera.

4. Why not tick another country off the list?

24

Stopping over in the Kingdom of Brunei also means you get to tick another country off your bucket-list – a nation that’s home to the largest oil fields in Asia and consequently one of the richest in the world.

You’ll also get to visit one of the most beautiful mosques in the world, the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, which is located in downtown Bandar Seri Begawan and has a roof made out of gold!
