Capella Hotels and Resorts will open two new hotels in Japan next year, with the brand’s debut of the Capella brand in Kyoto, and the first Patina Hotels & Resort urban hotel in Osaka.

Opening in April, Patina Osaka (main image) is in an enviable position opposite Osaka Castle and next to Naniwanomiya-Ato Park.

The 220-room hotel will have a plant-based restaurant with dishes incorporating ingredients from the edible garden; a tea lounge and rooftop cocktail bar.

Rooms and suites are designed with local materials and feature original art by regional artists, and all have large windows with views of Osaka Castle.

Paying homage to Kyoto’s heritage

Slated to open in Autumn 2025, Capella Kyoto will be the first Capella branded hotel to open in Japan.

The 92-room hotel will be located in the Miyagawa-chō district, an important geiko (geisha) neighbourhood, near the Kenninji temple.

The entire hotel design pays homage to the heritage of the region, with Japanese artworks and artefacts throughout, and a central Japanese garden.

Capella’s signature Auriga Spa has a private Onsen experience for a taste of Japan’s renowned bathing culture, while three eateries include a Japanese restaurant with a sunken garden.

“Built on the site of the beloved Shinmichi Elementary School, Capella Kyoto will be one that will live out the memory and culture of the region and create new values.”

Capella Hotel Group President, Cristiano Rinaldi says, “Filled with culture and heritage, Kyoto is the perfect place for us to establish a presence in Japan as the city is very much aligned with the group’s visionary curation of culture and experience.”
